getting started
This week we had some mini lectures from Dr. Forrest. I really liked this. There is a whole new vocabulary that I'm not familiar with and the combination of the reading plus our group discussion plus hearing from the prof the approach and ideas we should be looking for is very helpful.
Dr. Forrest plans to continue the rest of the semester this way. I think this will be particularly helpful for our group for keeping us on track, focused.
About the readings and lectures themselves - I had never heard of the AAPA's report - there are no such things as different races. It made perfect sense - there are no biological reasons that people with different coloured skin cannot mate for example - it's really no different than looking at a siamese cat and a manx or tabby. They're all cats - we don't call them different races. Oh. Uh oh. Different breeds though? Uggh. And then there are connotations attached: a siamese is regal, known for it's attitude; a manx is exotic; a tabby is just your ordinary common cat. arrgh. is this what defining races has done to people?
Gee I hope not all my posts this term are this offensive.
